LIFE IN THE PATCH

Feature-Image

My hubby works offshore every second month and we live for our Sunday phone calls when he is away from home.

Oil rig life takes its toll and both parties can experience bouts of loneliness during these times apart. I often get told “Shame, you must be so lonely?” or asked “How do you do it?” The truth is that I do get lonely, but I am more lonely for my husband. I at least have these little arms to wrap around my neck. I am not the one cramped in a small seat for hours at a time surrounded by a culture to which I do not belong. I am not on the other side of the world away from the people I love (the food I love, too!). I am not sleeping alone on a massive tin can, in hard bunks, experiencing a womb like feeling with straddling and swaying currents in the middle of a sea. Yes there are times when I just wish we could be together all the time, but know that life in the patch is part of who I am and who we are.

Today Shan phoned home and I could not resist snapping off some pictures – here are a few behind the scenes, some insight into our life, while my hubby and their dad is away. The taste I have had of running the show alone gives me a deep respect for single moms and dads across the globe, who daily press on for the sake of their children.

On the bright side, one thing is for sure… He comes home to us – tired and exhausted! But what he finds is me, his wife – tired and exhausted too! 😀
